Bain Capital sells Esure Group Plc amid takeover interest

2 April 2025
Insurance Journal
Esure Group Plc, a UK home and motor insurance provider, is poised for further growth following a £200 million ($258 million) revamp, as stated by CEO David McMillan. The company, which is backed by private equity firm Bain Capital, completed a significant three-year transformation of its technology, processes, and corporate culture. As a result, Esure reported a 14% increase in turnover, reaching £1.1 billion in 2024, along with a trading profit of £126.8 million, a notable recovery from a loss in the previous year.

McMillan emphasized the company's goal of becoming the leading digital insurer in the UK, noting that 80% of its customers now engage with the company digitally, a significant increase from previous years. Established in 2000, Esure serves around 2 million customers and operates under its own brand as well as Sheilas’ Wheels and First Alternative. The company went public on the London Stock Exchange in 2013 but was taken private by Bain Capital in a £1.2 billion deal in 2018.

Recent reports indicate that Esure has attracted interest from potential buyers, including major insurers such as Allianz SE and Sampo Oyj, which owns Hastings Group. Binding bids for the company are expected to be collected by Bain Capital on April 7. Other interested parties include Belgium's Ageas and US-based Allstate Insurance Co. and GEICO Corp.

While discussions are ongoing, there is no guarantee that these companies will proceed with bids. Representatives from Allianz, Ageas, Bain Capital, Esure, and Sampo have declined to comment, and Allstate and GEICO have not responded to inquiries.
