Sixth Street, Bridgepoint Reportedly Among Suitors for Kline Hill

October 11, 2024
Mergers & Acquisitions

Sixth Street, Bridgepoint Group Plc, and First Eagle Investment Management are reportedly interested in acquiring Kline Hill Partners, a firm specializing in secondary investments. The potential deal could value Kline Hill, based in Greenwich, Connecticut, at approximately $500 million. Kline Hill currently manages over $4.2 billion in assets.

A spokesperson for Kline Hill indicated that the firm is seeking a partner to enhance its capabilities as a liquidity provider for private equity assets, particularly in underserved market segments. While First Eagle declined to comment on the M&A discussions, representatives from Sixth Street and Bridgepoint also did not provide statements.

The interest in Kline Hill, led by managing partner Michael Bego and partner Jared Barlow, reflects a broader trend of consolidation within the alternative asset management sector. Firms are increasingly looking to expand their offerings to cater to large institutional investors, such as pension and sovereign wealth funds. Recent examples of this trend include CVC Capital Partners' acquisition of Glendower Capital and Ares' purchase of Landmark Partners for $1.08 billion in 2021.

Bridgepoint, based in London, manages around €67 billion (approximately $73 billion) in assets and has been active in acquisitions, including a recent purchase of Energy Capital Partners. Its stock has risen 71% over the past year. Sixth Street, with about $80 billion in assets under management, has also been expanding, recently appointing a former JPMorgan banker as its new CFO. First Eagle, which managed about $138 billion as of June 30, has made acquisitions as well, including the purchase of Napier Park Global Capital in 2022.

As the alternative asset management landscape evolves, the pursuit of Kline Hill by these firms underscores the competitive nature of the industry and the ongoing shift towards comprehensive service offerings for large investors.
