Ardonagh Group, a leading independent insurance distribution platform, has announced a significant equity investment from Stone Point Capital, a US-based private equity firm. This investment values Ardonagh at $14 billion and is expected to close in mid-2025, positioning Stone Point as a major shareholder alongside existing investors like Madison Dearborn Partners and HPS Investment Partners.
This announcement caps off a transformative year for Ardonagh, which has seen substantial growth through various acquisitions and mergers. Notable transactions include the refinancing of its operations in March, the merger of its personal lines business with Markerstudy in June, and the acquisition of Australia’s PSC Insurance Group in October. These moves have solidified Ardonagh's status as a top 20 global broker, handling $18 billion in premiums.
Founded in 2017, Ardonagh has rapidly expanded its footprint in the insurance market, beginning with the acquisition of Arachas in 2020, which established a strong presence in Ireland. The recent $2.3 billion take-private of PSC has further enhanced its position in the Asia-Pacific region and the UK market.
Currently, the UK remains Ardonagh's largest market, but the company is also seeing significant growth in Europe, APAC, and Latin America, which collectively contribute over 50% of its global property and casualty revenues. The acquisition of BGC’s insurance operations in 2021 bolstered its specialty market presence, making it the largest independent broker at Lloyd’s.
With Stone Point's backing, Ardonagh is poised to seize further growth opportunities in the global property and casualty insurance market. CEO David Ross emphasized that this investment marks a new phase in Ardonagh's journey, reinforcing its commitment to independence amid a consolidating market. He expressed confidence in the partnership's potential to enhance value for clients and shareholders.
Stone Point's Co-CEO, Jim Carey, expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Ardonagh's management team, highlighting the company's strong track record of growth. Madison Dearborn Partners and HPS Investment Partners also welcomed Stone Point's involvement, viewing it as a testament to Ardonagh's success and a boost to its operational and strategic capabilities.
The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. As Ardonagh continues to navigate the evolving insurance landscape, its strategic partnerships and investments position it well for future growth.
